Mitali Mukerji

Dr. Mitali Mukerji, PhD, FASc, FNASc is a Professor in the Department of Bioscience and Bioengineering at IIT Jodhpur and is affiliated with the School of Artificial Intelligence and Data Science (AIDE) and Centre for Emerging Technologies for Sustainable Development. . She earned her PhD in microbial molecular genetics from the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore in 1997.  Prior to joining IIT Jodhpur in 2021, she served as Chief Scientist at the CSIR-Institute of Genomics and Integrative Biology (IGIB), New Delhi, where she led the Genomics and Molecular Medicine department and CSIR’s Ayurgenomics unit TRISUTRA. She has contributed to research  human genomics with a focus on rare diseases and functional genomics of Alu repeats, biomarker discovery for disease susceptibility, environmental adaptations, and tracing mutational histories. She pioneered the field of Ayurgenomics, that integrates Ayurveda with modern genomics for personalized and integrative medicine, and was the convenor of  the Indian Genome Variation Consortium (IGVC), which provided the first comprehensive genetic landscape of Indian populations.

At IIT Jodhpur, Dr. Mukerji leads two major transdisciplinary initiatives: Thar DESIGNS, which explores human adaptation and ecosystem phenomics in the Thar Desert using multi-omic technologies including  population genomics, citizen science and ecology; and AYURTECH Centre of Excellence Centre of Excellence in Integrative Precision Health at AIDE school that builds AI enabled frameworks for early, actionable health interventions. through integration of principles and practices of Ayurveda with genomics and engineering sciences   for  evidence-based solutions.

Dr. Mukerji’s contributions have been recognized with several prestigious honors, including the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Award in Medical Sciences, election as Fellow of the Indian Academy of Sciences and the National Academy of Sciences, India, DBT Young Women scientist award, the VASVIK Award for Women Scientists, and Global WomenLift Health fellow.
