Dr. Sucharita Dey is an Assistant
Professor in the Department of Bioscience and Bioengineering at IIT Jodhpur.
She completed her PhD in Computational Structural Biology from Bose Institute,
Kolkata, in 2013, and postdoctoral training from Cancer Science Institute
Singapore and Weizmann Institute of Science, Israel, from 2013 to 2021. She is
a recipient of the Ramalingaswami fellowship and research grant 2021 from DBT
India.
She works in structural
bioinformatics, where her research group broadly focuses on understanding the
mechanisms underlying protein-protein interactions in the living cell. Her
research group focuses explicitly on studying genetic variations among diverse
populations and, hence, the mutational robustness of proteins. The aim is to
understand disease mechanisms in the context of protein structure (specifically
protein quaternary structure) variation. Her research interests also include
studying the diversity and unveiling novel principles of protein-protein
interactions, protein oligomerization and evolution, protein Quaternary
structure prediction, identifying structural determinants of inter-subunit
communication (Allostery), and designing molecules that act through an
allosteric transition. Her group uses diverse computational methods to do
structural analysis of bulk data. This ‘big data’ analysis on structural
biology is anticipated to create a new field of ‘structuromics’ (bridging
proteomics and interactomics with structural data), and her group at IIT
Jodhpur would be actively contributing to it.
