Welcome to the Department of Aerospace Engineering
Aerospace engineering today is undergoing a rapid transformation driven by the convergence of conventional aerospace sciences with emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, autonomous systems, and network-centric operations. The evolving landscape of aviation, unmanned systems, space technologies, and modern defence demands engineers and researchers who can work seamlessly across disciplines and translate fundamental knowledge into deployable technologies. With this vision, the Department of Aerospace Engineering at IIT Jodhpur is being developed as a multidisciplinary and future- oriented academic and research ecosystem. Our curriculum emphasises a strong foundation in classical aerospace engineering while integrating new-age technologies relevant to modern aerospace and defence applications. We also place significant importance on experiential and hands-on learning through activities involving the design, realisation, and testing of model aircraft, UAVs, and autonomous aerial systems.
Our academic and research activities are organised through a combination of verticals and horizontals, with verticals covering niche technology domains such as Drone and Autonomous Systems, Aircraft Design, Air-Defence Technologies, and Space Engineering. These are supported by horizontal research areas in Aerodynamics and Flight Mechanics, Propulsion and Turbomachinery, Guidance and Control, and Aerospace Structures. Our vision is to integrate aerospace engineering with emerging technologies, foster multidisciplinary research for innovation, self-reliance, and leadership in aerospace and allied technologies.
The department offers a UG programme in Aerospace Engineering covering the full breadth of the discipline. At the postgraduate level, it offers an M.Tech. programme in Drone and Anti-Drone Technologies, designed specifically to address the rapidly growing national and global requirements in unmanned systems, autonomous platforms, surveillance technologies, and air-defence applications. It also offers a PhD programme aimed at delivering high-quality, impactful research outcomes in frontier areas of aerospace and allied disciplines.
