Title of the talk: On analysis of some direct and inverse problems in scattering involving lattices.

Abstract: In this talk, I will give a brief overview of physical problems involving crystal lattices that lead to certain idealized cases which permit an interesting application of mathematics.  

I will mainly focus on those applications where Fourier analysis (Wiener-Hopf factorization), theory of inverse problems, and stochastic calculus play a dominant role. In such an overview of several works available in public domain, I will touch upon a topic just enough to highlight a connection with mathematics and also point out some open problems. 

[However, I may not be able to go into details but discussions after seminar can be used to get into details.]

I will start with the problem of scattering of waves by sharp slits in crystal lattices which can be understood in the paradigm of mechanical waves as well as tight-binding approximations in quantum mechanics. Some of these problems involve issues related to matrix Wiener-Hopf factorization and are currently open. I will also talk about some recent works dealing with the inverse problems for such discrete models based on the observations of scattering data. I will discuss briefly some ways to capture effects of stochasticity in lattice model specifications and obtain analogues of certain rigorous results available in the continuous framework.
