Abstract: Quantum superposition of single and many particle states is the heart and soul of quantum mechanics. First, examples of superposition of single particle quantum states, from chemistry to particle physics, along with some visual analogs, will be presented. Superposition of product states of two or more particles into a single non-separable entity is called entanglement. In a two particle entangled state the individuality of each is lost and measuring the state of one particle instantaneously fixes the state of the other irrespective of separation between them --- Nonlocality. This makes quantum computing super fast and quantum teleportation possible without violating no-cloning theorem. Any attempt by a spy agency to intercept a quantum key in a cryptography protocol becomes detectable by a Bell test. Atom Computing's 1180 qubit computer, quantum-encrypted video conference over Micius satellite between China and Austria in 2018, and open-air quantum teleportation over 143 km in the Canary Islands are latest achievements based on entanglement. After first quantum revolution brought by transistors and lasers, we are entering a second quantum revolution by manipulating systems of entangled particles. Storage of information in quantum bits (qubits), its processing, transfer, and sensing has created a new field of quantum information science.

About the Speaker: Prof. Natthi Lal Sharma is presently associated with Eastern Michigan University as an emeritus professor. His research interests include many-body Green's functions, the quantum Langevin equation, electrodynamics, optics, quantum entanglement and Bell inequality, among others.
