Where? D. S. Kothari Seminar Hall, Department of Physics

Abstract: Thin-film devices and flexible electronics have garnered significant attention due to their potential in transformative applications such as wearable devices, medical implants, and smart agriculture. These innovative systems enable unique functionalities, including bendability, stretchability, and wearability, opening up new possibilities in areas ranging from preventive healthcare and Industry to smart textiles. A concrete example of such advancements is the development of foldable smartphones. Typically constructed with nanoscale thin films on polymeric substrates, flexible electronics are designed to perform reliably under mechanical deformation. However, the widespread adoption of these technologies raises critical environmental concerns. The electronic and plastic waste generated at the end of their life cycle can pose significant hazards to the environment, contributing to the growing e-waste problem. To mitigate these issues, there is an urgent need for the development of natural, non-toxic, and recyclable electronic materials. Addressing these challenges proactively is essential to ensure that the rise of flexible electronics does not exacerbate the environmental burden of e-waste. This approach aligns with the goal of promoting sustainability in the context of emerging technologies.

About the speaker: Dr. Deepa Bhatt holds a Ph.D. in Materials Science from IIT Kanpur, along with M.Sc. in Physics,  M.Tech in Nanotechnology, and a B.Sc. in Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics. She is currently a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Faculty of Engineering at NOI Techpark, Free University of Bozen-Bolzano, Italy.

Her research focuses on the fabrication and characterization of semiconductor devices for sensing applications, including chemical and biosensing. She specializes in thin-film transistor fabrication and characterization using diverse materials such as IGZO, graphene, MoSâ??, and polymers. Additionally, her work involves the design of microfluidic channels for sensing and the development of green electronics.
